Sam Swank updatePosted 07:36 p.m., October 8, 2008 Just a little note on Sam Swank, who just might've been Wake Forest's most valuable player the past few years. The Demon Deacons' kicker/punter could be on the shelf tomorrow night after suffering a pulled quad during Monday's practice. Coach Jim Grobe shed some light on the situation today during the ACC teleconference. "It's a big concern," he said. "Obviously we were pretty comfortable with Sam when he was out on the field because he's done it so much." Swank entered the season as the nation's active career leader with 60 field goals and was an amazing 9-of-12 from 50 yards or farther. Swank's replacement would be Shane Popham, a redshirt freshman who hasn't yet kicked or punted in college. Grobe said Popham has a strong leg, but who knows how he'll respond under the lights? "He's just not been there before, so it's a concern. I think the ability is there. It's just a matter of keeping him calm and having him go out. And I think once he gets the first punt away or the first kick away, he'll be fine." Grobe is not discounting the possibility Swank will be available. "By tomorrow night, who knows?" he said. "He could be ready to go. We're counting on Shane being the guy right now, but you just never know. Sometimes young kids heal up pretty quick." LW |
