Monday practice tidbits

-- No announcement yet on DeAndre McDaniel. As I said a few days ago, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't happen until later this week. This thing still has to be cleared through university channels, and that could take some time.
-- Defensive coordinator Vic Koenning raised some eyebrows when asked a general question about Alabama receiver Julio Jones. Koenning has a lot of ties in south Alabama, and that's where Jones is from.
Koenning's response:
"I actually ran into Julio in the spring recruiting. I said hello to him. I said, 'Well, I guess I’ll be seeing you at the end of August.' And then he got out and got in his Escalade and drove off. That’s serious. And then I went over and watched (Alabama freshman) Burton Scott at Vigor High School at the track over there, and Burton Scott was running around. He went and got in his Escalade out at track practice and drove off. So I’m familiar with those two guys."
Wow. Ouch. Wow.
Think that might cause a stir in Tuscaloosa?
-- Tommy Bowden seems to think redshirt freshman offensive lineman Mason Cloy is gonna be ready to go Saturday. Cloy was back at practice Monday, and that's big considering he's the sixth-best lineman at this point ... and the backup to starting guards Jamarcus Grant and Barry Humphries.
-- Freshman tailback Jamie Harper was upgraded to a green jersey, but Bowden didn't seem too optimistic. It's probably still safe to say he's going to be limited for the opener.
-- Defensive end Kevin Alexander is back at full-go after missing time with an infection on the back of his leg. Sounds like he's in line to get the start over freshman Da'Quan Bowers, though these guys are probably going to split playing time down the middle anyway.
-- Punting is still a tight battle between Jimmy Maners and Dawson Zimmerman. Sounds like this is going to go down to the wire. I'd imagine Bowden would name a starter Thursday instead of going into Saturday with this thing up in the air, but you never know.
-- No word yet on who's starting at defensive tackle (Jamie Cumbie or Jarvis Jenkins), but it's sort of the same deal as defensive end. These guys are probably going to split reps anyway.
-- Bowden doesn't seem very comfortable with his second-team offensive line. It really sounds like the first team is going to have to play a bunch of snaps Saturday.
-- Bowden on Julio Jones: "I've seen him. He's on YouTube. He's good."
OK for now. Gotta get started writing for tomorrow's paper. More later.

Well, THAT will reverberate through the college football world. Gotta love Vic.
I think Bowden's Youtube comment was a dig at Saban who freaked out after practice videos (featuring Jones) were posted on the internet last week.
Looks like they gotta little fire in them this week, Larry. :)

This Koenning sounds like a racist. He thinks that every black driving a nice car got it by cheating.

Well I'm thinking here is Clemson and all of a sudden
this habitual ne'er do well ACC team is inking Five star RBs from Florida that everyone wants, and they're suddenly bringing up, paying players?
What is it called when you assign your own character defects to others? Transference?

That is hilarious considering this photo -- http://www.yardbarker.com/m/11837/xl/cle... -- of a Clemson recruit was taken shortly after he agreed to play for the lily white Tigers. If you're too lazy to check the picture, its a photo Kenneth Page holding a stack of cash. Also, neither Scott nor Jones drives an Escalade, but dont let that get in the way of the witch hunt you or the Forrest Gump of a coach have going

TigerAl - Vic said nothing about them being African American. Maybe your the racist. It is unusual for Freshmen in college to have such nice vehicles don't you think? Particularly with gas at $3.50 a gallon - an Escalade is quite expensive for someone in college. I wish I could afford one.

That photo of Kenneth Page was taken when he was on a trip to Cali. where his uncle lives. The uncle owns a bunch of ATMs which they were stocking and Kenneth thought it would be funny to take that pic and put it on facebook. Believe me, the NCAA immediately investigated it and the uncle had to confirm what they were doing and that Page was actually out in California at the time (he was in an All-Star game). It's been cleared by the NCAA.
Maybe Jones and Scott were just allowed to drive "a booster's" Escalade all the time like Derek Watson???

mcfadden00 - You should probably do a little homework and realize your coach was joking. Also, another fact lost in this is that neither Jones nor Scott drive an Escalade. All in all, it was a classless "joke" by Koenning.

Rich Uncles pay for everything in Clemson, everywhere else it is a booster that the coach knows. Lol.
