The high school basketball regular season wrap ups Friday as teams look to finish among the top four in their respective regions and earn playoff berths.
In Region 7-AAAA, the boys’ title will be decided on Friday night when West Ashley plays at James Island. West Ashley’s only league loss this season came against James Island, which is unbeaten in the region. Wando and Goose Creek will be the other two playoff teams from 7-AAAA.
In the girls’ region race, undefeated Goose Creek holds a one-game edge on Wando. The two teams also play on Friday night to decide the title. West Ashley and James Island will finish among the top four as well.
The Region 8-AAAA girls’ championship comes down to Summerville and Ashley Ridge. Fort Dorchester will finish no worse than third and will earn a spot in the postseason bracket.
The Fort Dorchester boys need one win in their last two games to claim the region title. Fort Dorchester held a two-game edge on Summerville heading into the final week.
In Region 8-AAA boys, Hanahan entered the final week with a one-game lead on Beaufort and Orangeburg-Wilkinson. Berkeley will be the fourth team out of the region to land a playoff berth.
Orangeburg-Wilkinson has already clinched the Region 8-AAA girls title, while Stall and Berkeley entered the final week tied for second. Beaufort will likely end up as the fourth team to earn a playoff berth, leaving Hanahan on the outside looking in.
Bishop England’s girls have won another Region 6-AA title and enter the playoffs as the team to beat in the AA ranks. Battery Creek, Whale Branch and Academic Magnet will finish in the top four as well.
Battery Creek and Academic Magnet are battling for the Region 6-AA boys title and both will be in the playoffs. Bishop England also earned a postseason bid with its victory over Academic Magnet last Friday.
James Island signings
James Island Charter High School held a ceremony last week to recognize six students who signed athletic scholarships for college.
Swimmer Peyton Wilson, the 2015 All-Lowcountry swimmer of the year, signed with San Diego State. Hailey Sweatman signed to run track at South Carolina, and Emma Dupree signed with College of Charleston in track.
Baseball player Parker Bass signed with Spartanburg Methodist and volleyball player Cecelia Cogliano signed with Piedmont. Football player Buss Hamilton signed with South Carolina State.
Ross in All-Star Classic
Goose Creek senior guard Chris Ross was the lone lowcountry player selected to play in the Carolinas All-Star Classic — an all-star game between top basketball seniors from South Carolina and North Carolina. The game will be March 19 at Socastee High School.
Rosters for the North-South all-star game will be released soon. That game will be played March 19 at Lexington High School.
Summerville baseball ranked
Summerville’s baseball team will enter the 2016 season as the 20th-ranked high school team in the country, according to Collegiate Baseball magazine’s national poll.
Summerville, 25-4 last season, will be led by senior pitcher Sawyer Bridges, who was recently named as a second-team preseason All-American by Louisville Slugger.
