Former Burke High School standout Raven Saunders has her Ole Miss career off to a flying start.
Saunders, the two-time NCAA shot put champion, transferred from Southern Illinois to Ole Miss after her SIU coach, Connie Price-Smith, was hired by Ole Miss.
In her second meet with the Rebels last weekend, Saunders uncorked a personal-record effort of 61 feet, 3 inches. That’s the best women’s shot put in the world this year, and makes Saunders the No. 4 female shot-putter in NCAA history. She’s also the first Ole Miss athlete, male or female, to break the 60-foot mark.
“Anytime you break a record it’s a great day, and Raven had a great day,” said head coach Connie Price-Smith, whose team is ranked No. 25 in the nation. “There is still room for improvement, and she will keep working hard every day to throw farther and farther.”
