GAFFNEY, S.C. — The big peach has turned into a lemon.

But officials say work on the big water tank along Interstate 85 in Gaffney is just part of a paint job to repair damage from fluctuating temperatures this winter that caused big sheets of paint to fall off.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports it’s taking several months to complete the paint job on the 1 million gallon tank.

Kim Fortner with the Gaffney Board of Public Works says the Peachoid was sandblasted, leaving the tank bare. It now has a coat of primer that looks yellow.

Fortner says if the weather cooperates, the new paint job should be finished next month.

Muralist Eric Henn is mixing several shades of orange and yellow to get a perfect peach color.
