COLUMBIA - Republican firebrand and likely presidential contender U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is headlining a state GOP fundraiser this month, the state party announced Tuesday.
Cruz, R-Texas, will host a luncheon at Seawell's, a Columbia banquet hall, on Sept. 15.
Forty dollars gets donors lunch, $100 gets a photo with a senator and $250 gets donors a photo and a spot on the event's host committee, according to the online invitation.
Cruz, 43, is a Harvard-educated lawyer who identifies with the tea party movement and has been a divisive figure in the U.S. Senate in his first term. In a recent speech in Texas, Cruz said that the 2014 mid-term election is about immigration issues. "President Obama has made a decision to make this election in 2014 a national referendum on amnesty," Cruz said in reference to an expected executive order from the White House, according to a Washington Post report.
Cruz has been in South Carolina several times, which hosts the South's first primary. His visit in Columbia follows one by Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Aug. 27.
