Charleston County has a number of positions available for people who want to get involved in local government, and application deadlines are fast approaching.

For those interested in full-time, temporary paid work, the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration is accepting applications for jobs helping the county get ready for the Nov. 4 general election. The application deadline is Friday.

Charleston County also has numerous vacancies to fill on various boards and commissions, whose members are not paid. Applications for those positions are due Sept. 8.

The paid jobs with the Board of Elections and Voter Registration involve alphabetizing and filing applications, data entry, customer service, and providing technical assistance. Training is provided and the work pays $9.50 per hour for a 40-hour work week. Overtime may be required.

Applicants must be a high school graduate or have a GED plus completion of some college courses, and must pass a typing and filing test. Computer skills preferred. To apply by Friday, email a resume to Phyllis Cole at or Mary Adams at

Charleston County is also seeking volunteers for these boards and commissions:

Accommodation Tax Advisory Committee - 3 vacancies. Applicants must reside in unincorporated Charleston County. Preference will be given to those residing in unincorporated West Ashley and Johns Island.

Awendaw Consolidated Fire District Advisory Board - 1 vacancy. Applicants must reside in the East Cooper area and receive fire service from the Awendaw Consolidated Fire District.

Business License/User Fee Appeals Board - 4 vacancies. At least 1 appointee must be a CPA or attorney and all applicants are encouraged to have a strong legal and/or financial background.

Charleston County Forestry Board - 1 vacancy.

Community Development Advisory Board - 2 vacancies. One for a representative from the financial sector; one for a representative from the construction sector.

Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals - 2 vacancies. One for a licensed electrical contractor; one for a resident state fire marshal.

Disabilities and Special Needs Board - 6 vacancies.

Procurement Appeals Board - 4 vacancies.

St. Andrew's Parks and Playground Commission - 1 vacancy. Must be a resident of St. Andrew's Public Service District.
