Labor Day, in my opinion, is the most bittersweet holiday of the year.

On the bitter side, it signals the unofficial end to another Lowcountry summer. Soon, we'll see shorter days, fewer beach trips and more reasons to go to bed early.

But it does mean we get a long weekend, which of course will be marked by good sales at all of the big stores.

If you can peel yourself away from the end-of-summer celebrations, it'd be wise to check out some of these Labor Day sales while they last.

New mattresses

While mattresses are always a big investment, mattress sales around this time of year can soften the blow of a big price tag.

Walmart has some off-brand mattresses like the Slumber 1 10-inch pillow top mattress for $269 or less.

Sears has slashed prices on brand-name models such as the Serta Super Pillowtop, which was marked down from $1,125 to $446.

I'd recommend reading Consumer Reports' Mattress Buying Guide online and some of their mattress ratings before making any purchases.

Summer apparel

Deals on clothes are all over the place right now. Victoria's Secret just marked down women's apparel, shoes and swimsuits by up to 60 percent off this week.

At Target, select apparel for kids, men and women are buy one, get one for 50 percent off.

There also are dozens of good online sales right now, such as 6pm.com, where hundreds of shoes and apparel for men and women are priced at $10 or less. Plus, all orders qualify for free shipping.

Appliances

Certain kitchen appliances such as slow cookers are on sale at several big box stores this weekend.

For example, Target has a Crock-Pot, Black & Decker 12-speed blender and a Mr. Coffee coffeemaker all for $25 right now.

At Sears, all Cuisinart appliances, certain juicers and Bella Cookware sets are 30 percent off.

For major appliances, check out H.H. Gregg, where you can save up to 30 percent on refrigerators, washer and dryer sets and stove tops.

Outdoor gear

The waning days of summer and early fall are great times for a camping trip, and it's an even better time to find all the gear you'll need on sale.

Walmart has a bundle deal right now for an instant canopy, fold-up table and four outdoor chairs for $109, with free shipping.

L.L. Bean has cut prices on all paddleboards and kayaks online by 20 percent off, which means you can find an inflatable stand-up paddleboard for less than $800 without shipping fees.
