Summerville will offer a citizens police academy this fall in hopes of showing people who live or work there what it takes to be a law officer.

The classes will involve Summerville Police Department employees and instructors with special knowledge, audio and video presentations and hands-on activities, the agency said in a statement.

Participants will get a chance to see officers in action and "hopefully a positive insight into the difficult challenges" they face, the department said.

The course is limited to 20 people. Participants must live or work in the town and be at least 18 years old.

The classes will run between 6 and 9 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 18 to Nov. 20 and take place in the department's training room at 300 W. 2nd North St. Some optional Saturday classes might offer additional hands-on experience, the department said.

A graduation ceremony will be Nov. 24.
