CHARLOTTE -- Summerville High School shook off a slow start and dominated the second-half en route to a 31-9 win over Providence High School in the season opener for both teams.
Junior quarterback Sawyer Bridges scored on two short runs and connected with Krishawn Jackson on a 60-yard touchdown pass to propel the Green Wave. Darrell Ford also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown as coach John McKissick opened his 63rd season with his 614th win.
Summerville trailed, 6-0, early in the game but Ford gave the Green Wave a 7-6 lead with his kick return for a score. Providence took a 9-7 lead on a field goal but Bridges' pass to Jackson put Summerville up for good. Bridges finished the night 10 of 15 for 189 yards.
Edward DeLong kicked a 27-yard field goal just before halftime for a 16-9 lead. Bridges added two one-yard runs in the second-half for the final margin.
Summerville's defense was led by senior end Matt Powell, who had three sacks in the win.
Summerville will play at Cane Bay, a 28-27 winner over Colleton County, next Friday night.
