2013: 0-10 overall, 0-7 in SCISA -A
Coach: J.W. Myers (Fifth season)
Returning starters: 6 (3 offense, 3 defense)
Players to watch: TE/LB Will Hollingsworth, RB/LB Josh Morgan, WR/DB Ben Forbes
Fifth-year head coach J.W. Myers sees light at the end of the tunnel as he continues his efforts to provide stability and success at Coastal Christian Academy.
The Cougars struggled through an 0-10 campaign last fall as Myers worried at times if they would have enough players to play on the eight-man level.
Things are a bit better entering 2014.
"Last year at this time, we had six kids and I think we can probably have at least 12 kids this season," said Myers. "I'm not worrying right now like I was last year. We have a few guys back with experience but we have a good many new kids that are doing a good job."
Coastal Christian's three returning players from last season are senior Will Hollingsworth (TE/LB), and juniors Josh Morgan (RB/LB) and Ben Forbes (WR/DB). Hollingsworth is the team's lone senior.
Freshman Robert Crates will be the starting quarterback and gained some experience in games last year.
Freshman Ashton Wood is expected to contribute at wide receiver and the team's top lineman is newcomer Spencer Wright, a junior.
Last season, the Cougars were out-scored, 566-128. Myers feels this year's team can compete better.
"I'm pretty encouraged and I feel like we will be able to stay in games and be more competitive," he said.
"I don't know how many games we can win but anything is better than 0-10. We're just trying to compete and have a chance to win some games late."
The Cougars open the season on Aug. 22 at Laurens Academy.
