A woman, pronounced dead after being found on the side of a Berkeley County road, may have been the victim of a hit-and-run wreck, authorities said.
Peggy Ann Cain, 59, of Cross, was found lying on Trojan Road around 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury. She was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries, he said.
An autopsy will determine what killed the woman, Salisbury said, but her death is currently being investigated by Highway Patrol as a hit-and-run.
The suspect vehicle may have damage to its passenger side, according to Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly. The vehicle may also have headlight, fender and side mirror damage, she said.
The make and model of the vehicle were unknown Wednesday.
Anyone with information about the case can contact Highway Patrol at 953-6010. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
