Fatalities in 2014

The S.C. Department of Public Safety reported 444 people killed statewide in fatal wrecks between Jan. 1 and Aug. 17. In 2013, 463 deaths were reported during the same time period, state officials said.

Four people were killed statewide in weekend wrecks, preliminary reports show.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, all four deaths reported between Friday and Sunday occurred on U.S., state and secondary roads.

Two of the people killed were not wearing seat belts, authorities said.

The deaths brought this year's total to 444, compared with the 463 highway deaths reported this time last year, officials said.

Of this year's deaths, 156 people had access to seat belts but weren't wearing them, authorities said. Seven bicyclists, 48 pedestrians and 50 motorcyclists have also died this year, records show.
