Burgers and hot dogs graced the grill; beverages flowed; and local homebuilders, mortgage lenders and remodeling experts spent a few hours relaxing July 24.
Dozens of guests took part in the late evening Summer Spectacular Blast at Charleston Maritime Center on Wharfside Street downtown. The Charleston Home Builders Association sponsored the fest.
The event gave people associated with the home building industry a chance to network in a casual setting while enjoying food and drink.
A notable moment was the Home Builders Association's presentation of a $2,900 check to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Carolina. Albert van Overeem of Brock Built Homes, this year's HBA president, made the announcement along with Tori Stein and other association officers and directors.
Funds were raised as part of the Paul Stein "Drive Out" Leukemia Golf Tournament sponsored by the Home Builders Association May 8 at Oak Point Golf Course on Johns Island. Teams made donations based on number of players, and various groups sponsored individual golf holes.
Stein, who died of cancer in July 2013, was a long-time homebuilder with Atlantic Builders Inc. and past president of the HBA in 2002.
His wife, Tori Stein, was president and chief executive of Atlantic Builders and is now vice-president of Gamble-Atlantic, a division of Gamble Home Services.
Paul Stein launched Atlantic Builders as a "turn-key design build" firm in 1978. The couple's business specialized in home remodeling projects.
Tori Stein is likewise a past president of the Home Builders Association, having served in 2009. Also that year she was recipient of the Charleston Prism Award for Best Remodeling Project in the $250,000-$500,000 range.
She was Remodeler of the Year for the Charleston area in 2008 and 2009, past state director of the South Carolina Home Builders Association; state national director for the National Home Builders Association; and 2006 president for the Remodelers Council for Charleston.
