GREER, S.C. - The city of Greer has closed an apartment building after a sinkhole opened behind the complex.
Greer spokesman Steve Owens told local media outlets that residents reported the sinkhole behind one of the buildings at the Legacy Crescent Park Apartments shortly before 6 p.m. Monday.
Owens said the city's engineer and building inspectors found erosion beneath the slab foundation between 1-and 3-feet deep. Owens said the sinkhole left no support on one side of a building that sits next to a retaining wall and retention pond.
Inspectors used a rod to probe the soil under the building and found no resistance, he said.
"It's sloppy mud," he said. "Not only is there erosion under the foundation, but the soil under the foundation is very weak."
Owens says some residents moved into unoccupied apartments at the complex. He did not know how many people were affected.
A structural engineer will assess the damage and try to determine whether the building can be saved.
