BEAUFORT, S.C. - Top elected officials in Beaufort County are criticizing the federal government over the secrecy involved in bringing immigrant children to the state.
State Sen. Tom Davis says it's disrespectful to the state. The Island Packet of Hilton Head also reports that Sheriff P.J. Tanner says the federal government has overstepped its bounds keeping the state and the county in the dark.
The two made the comments Tuesday during a meeting of the Bluffton Tea Party.
The federal government reports about 430 unaccompanied immigrant children have been relocated to South Carolina. But names, ages, where they are from and where they are living has not been released.
The children may stay in the state and attend school until their immigration status is decided by the courts.
