A domestic dispute on the Isle of Palms Tuesday night turned into a police chase and standoff with a Mount Pleasant SWAT team.
Andrew Niehus, 35, of Brownell Avenue on Sullivan's Island was taken into custody and charged with reckless driving, failure to stop for blue lights and criminal domestic violence.
Officers were called to a domestic dispute on Isle of Palms. A man later identified as Niehus led them on a chase to Mount Pleasant, where he struck an occupied vehicle and kept going, according to Inspector Chip Googe of the Mount Pleasant police department.
Police ended up at a friend's house in the Crowne Point neighborhood, which is near the Isle of Palms Connector and Rifle Range Road. The acquaintance left the house safely as police arrived about 8 p.m., Googe said.
Residents were told to stay inside their homes as SWAT members and negotiators arrived. Niehus came out without incident shortly after midnight and was taken into custody by Isle of Palms police, Googe said.
