For the first time since late last week, the Charleston area's chances of thunderstorm activity is only "slight" on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The moist, unstable air that had been entrenched over the Lowcountry since the weekend has been replaced by a cold front that will temper the risk of showers and storms through early next week, the Weather Service said.

But the risk of normal summertime thunderstorm coverage should rise again by midweek, forecasters said.

Days of thunderstorm activity, though, ended with a bang Tuesday night in parts of Berkeley and Charleston counties, where a strong storm brought frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy rainfall from Moncks Corner to Mount Pleasant.

Some areas south of Moncks Corner saw nearly 2 inches of rain, according to estimates from weather radar.

An official Weather Service station near the Charleston International Airport recorded 0.90 inches of rain on Tuesday.
