AIKEN, S.C. - Police say a 55-year-old man has been charged with filing a false police report after he told authorities a mountain lion had escaped from a pet store and was on the loose in Aiken.
The report turned out to be false. But Aiken Police told WRDW-TV that they had about a dozen officers looking for the mountain lion for up to 18 hours.
Authorities said Billy Lunsford of North Augusta reported around 1 a.m. Sunday that a burglar broke into the pet store and let the mountain lion loose. Police warned residents that the domesticated, declawed mountain lion was 3-feet tall, 100 pounds and was wearing a dog harness.
Police say there was never a mountain lion in the store.
It wasn't known if Lunsford has a lawyer.
