A Republican state lawmaker who holds himself out as a doctor of theology has a criminal record and only an honorary degree, according to a story posted today on the Charleston City Paper's website.

S.C. Rep. Samuel Rivers Jr., (R-Goose Creek), was convicted of assault and battery in 1995 in Berkeley County and was awarded an honorary doctor of theology degree from Smith Christian University, a little-known, unlicensed Florida-based school.
