Communities nationwide will gather tonight to celebrate a night out against crime.

National Night Out began in 1984 with people leaving their porch lights on as a way to stand together against violence.

The demonstration has since evolved into events including rallies, neighborhood cookouts, youth events nationwide.

According to the National Night Out website, at least 60 communities plan to hold events tonight throughout South Carolina.

Locally, North Charleston officers and residents will gather at Park Circle, 4800 Park Circle, for free food and games, according to a flier released by police. That event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the flier said.

Community members will also gather from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Park West Swim and Tennis Club in Mount Pleasant, 1348 Parkwest Blvd.

That event will feature food, K-9 demonstrations, SWAT vehicles and child fingerprinting, according to a flier.
