Theatrics Unlimited, a local costume rental shop that has served Charleston's theater and film industries for 36 years, is closing its big red doors this month.
Shop owner Sharon Willis, who is also a playwright and theater professor at Trident Technical College, said she is closing the brick-and-mortar part of the business to pursue other activities, but that she will continue to provide costumes for local productions on a freelance basis.
"All of those tools that I have built will still go on, it just won't go on in the same manner," Willis said. "We have been blessed with this business for many years. We have been able to do so many things because of it."
The store at 981 King St. will have a liquidation sale until it closes Aug. 12. Many costumes will also be donated to the Jenkins Institute in North Charleston and to the theater programs at Trident and Drew University.
To catch a competitor
Wal-Mart is rolling out its "Savings Catcher" program Monday in all of its stores across the country after testing it out this summer in mar- kets such as Charlotte and Atlanta.
The mega-retailer has long offered to match the prices advertised at its competing stores, but according to company spokeswoman Kayla Whaling, "Savings Catcher" goes a step further and does the research for its customers.
After customers shop at Wal-Mart, they can go online to Savingscatcher.walmart.com and enter the receipt number to ensure they got the lowest price possible.
The online tool searches for prices advertised in other stores in that market, and if Wal-Mart's price wasn't the lowest, it will refund the price difference to the customer with a Wal-Mart e-gift card.
The card is redeemable only online, Whaling said.
"It's building customers' confidence in our prices, and it's also doing the hard work for them so they know that when they shop with us, they're getting the best prices," Whaling said.
