The beermaker who started a popular brewery-music venue hybrid in North Carolina will bring the same concept to the Lowcountry next year.
Jason Caughman, who helped establish Pisgah Brewing Co. in Black Mountain, N.C., sold his share of the company to his partner and is moving back to Charleston to start a similar beer venue, Lo-Fi Brewery, on Meeting Street Road.
Pisgah Brewing, situated between the craft beer haven Asheville, N.C., and Pisgah National Forest, brews four signature ales on-site and hosts live bluegrass and jam bands year-round on two stages.
Caughman, who lived in Charleston 10 years ago, said he wants a similar music-oriented environment at Lo-Fi.
"What I want is a funky brewery with music and food and have dance parties and art shows. Just to have fun with it," he said.
The concept so far is heavy on the "funky" side. Caughman said he plans to age his Belgian and German-style beer in whiskey and rum barrels, and he wants to make sake and serve Asian food.
He leased a 10,000-square-foot warehouse at 2038 Meeting Street Road in the North Area, which will house the main brewing space. The lot sits on nearly 2 acres of land, so Caughman said he hopes to eventually expand the brewery site to include stages and other event spaces.
"Making the beer is the first priority. I'll be doing that, realistically, at the start of next year," he said.
The Tattooed Moose, a popular bar and casual eatery at 1137 Morrison Drive, is breaking ground on its new Johns Island location next week.
To mark the occasion, restaurant owners Jen and Mike Kulick will host a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Johns Island restaurant site at 3328 Maybank Highway. When construction wraps up in the spring next year, it will include an outdoor bar and a custom smokehouse. Like the downtown spot, it will regularly host live music.
"We're excited to bring the Moose's funky vibe to Johns Island, where we feel like we'll be a one-of-a-kind spot," Jen Kulick said.
Eye on the dollar
While Family Dollar has been mum on which stores it plans to close - the company said it was closing at least 370 stores earlier this year - at least the three stores under construction in the Charleston area are safe for now.
A spokesman for Family Dollar confirmed Tuesday that the one under development in North Charleston at 6656 Dorchester Road will open next month, and another at Ashley River and Dogwood roads is set to open in September. A third Family Dollar in St. George at 5995 Jim Bilton Parkway won't open until early next year.
