Former Burke High School standout Raven Saunders claimed a silver medal for Team USA in the World Junior Track and Field Championships on Friday night in Eugene, Oregon.
Saunders, who graduated from Burke this year, threw the shot put a distance of 16.63 meters (about 54 feet, 6 3/4 inches) to claim the silver in the girls' competition.
China's Tianqian Guo won the gold medal at 17.71 meters (about 58 1 1/4 inches). Turkey's Emel Dereli took the bronze at 16.55 meters.
Saunders, who will attend Southern Illinois University this fall, is the state and national record-holder for high school girls in the shot put.
