GREENWOOD, S.C. - A Greenwood hospital is warning more than 500 patients that their personal and medical information could be at risk after a laptop was stolen during a break in.
Officials at Self Regional Healthcare told The Index-Journal of Greenwood that the laptop was taken May 25.
Police arrested two suspects a few weeks later who said they threw the laptop into Lake Thurmond. Divers have not been able to find the computer.
Hospital officials say the laptop was password protected, but the patient files were not encrypted to provide extra security.
Self Regional Healthcare says there is no evidence the patients' information has been compromised. Hospital officials are beginning to notify patients by mail and will offer a year of free credit monitoring. They also have improved security.
