HILTON HEAD ISLAND - Beware if you are driving onto Hilton Head Island.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/1nG7ZAe) that police and the South Carolina Highway Patrol have increased traffic enforcement on U.S. 278, the only road onto the resort island.
Agencies are stepping up enforcement because of a recent spike in the number of crashes. Five people were injured, one critically earlier this month when an accident was caused by a motorists following another too closely.
Bluffton police have issued 56 tickets this month, compared with only 33 in July of last year.
Highway Patrol troopers have handed out almost 150 tickets this month, compared with about 100 during the previous three weeks.
