The 2014 South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series championship is very much up in the air heading into the year's final event, the Edisto Marina Billfish Tournament, which will be fished Thursday through Saturday.
Rascal, out of Georgetown, owned by Norman Pulliam and Foster McKissick and captained by Mark Rogers, holds a slim lead over Syked Out and Mister Pete with Petrel a close fourth. Rascal has 2,675 points, while Syked Out, owned by David Sykes and Dan Woody, and Mister Pete, owned by Bob McClam and captained by Alan Neiford, both have 2,475 points. Petrel, owned by Harry Johnson Jr. and captained by John Thomas, has 2,275 points.
Scoring in Governor's Cup events, based on released fish, is 600 points for blue marlin, 300 for white marlin and 200 for sailfish. Blue marlin that meet the series' minimum size limit that are brought in to be weighed score one point per pound.
Syked Out and Petrel both have tournament victories this year, Syked Out at Bohicket and Petrel at the Carolina Billfish Classic. Rascal has third-place finishes at Georgetown and at the Carolina Billfish Classic. Mister Pete finished third at MegaDock.
Showtime was the 2013 series champion with Rascal taking second place, and that's also how they finished last year at Edisto which drew 30 entries in 2013.
Weigh-ins for the Edisto tournament are 5-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 5-7 p.m. Saturday.
