A body found in a cornfield in Holly Hill this month has been identified as a North Charleston man, authorities said.
According to Orangeburg County sheriff's deputies, 26-year-old Adelso Corado Barrientos was found dead July 8 off Farm Field Road. He lived in North Charleston but had acquaintances in Orangeburg County, deputies said.
A passerby had smelled the decay and saw a shoe in a ditch, deputies reported. Investigators who were called to the scene found human remains behind a bush.
The Orangeburg County Coroner's Office has not released an approximate time or manner of death.
"The hard work of our Forensic Investigators and all officers led us to identify Barrientos," Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell is quoted in a release as saying. "They were in contact with several local, state and federal agencies to get us to this point in the investigation. This investigation is far from over as there is more to be learned about Barrientos death."
Anyone with information about Barrientos or his family can contact investigators at 803-534-3550. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers 554-1111.
