The vintage grocery posters backing the menus at Union Provisions reference the "Provisions" portion of the new Upper King restaurant's name. And the pulled pork steamed buns are a salute to San Francisco, the city through which Union Street runs.

Co-owner Ben Russell-Schlesinger hails from San Francisco. But steamed buns aside, the Union Provisions' menu of small plates is dominated by regional flavors: A press release describes chef Shane Whiddon's dishes, including charcuterie, crudo, grilled flatbreads and French fries, as "melding international flavors and classic Southern ingredients." Before they hired a chef, Russell-Schlesinger and Robert Young said they envisioned the restaurant's fare as fitting in between A.C.'s and The Ordinary.

In addition to food, Union Provision is offering beer on tap; cocktails and a 75-bottle wine list: The bottles are displayed in an illuminated wine wall that publicity materials tout as the room's "piece de resistance."

Union Provisions, at 513 King St., is open daily from 11 a.m.-2 a.m. For more information, call 641-0821 or visit
