BEAUFORT, S.C. - Beaufort is considering new rules for carriage tours, in part, because of concerns about the health of horses.
The Beaufort Gazette reports city council is considering several changes.
One is that a third-party veterinarian conducts periodic checks of the animals. Another is that horses be required to wear horseshoes.
Another change would add an additional tour so the city's two carriage companies get the same number of tours each month. The current schedule gives one company with an extra tour each month.
The city's tourism management advisory commission recently allowed horses to work in 91 degree temperatures, up from 90 degrees. That change is being tested for a 30-day trial.
