A body found in a cornfield in Holly Hill last week remains a mystery.
The Orangeburg County Coroner's Office has not been able to identify the body or determine race, gender or approximate time or manner of death because of advanced decomposition, Chief Deputy Coroner Sean D. Fogle said Tuesday.
A person walking along Farm Field Road smelled the decay about 8:30 a.m. July 8 and found a shoe in a ditch, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said last week. Deputies were called in and found human remains behind a bush.
"At this point, we have not been able to positively identify the individual, so we are not ruling anything out," Ravenell said.
Holly Hill is in Orangeburg County. It's north of St. George, which is in Dorchester County.
