What is it?

The proverbial expression "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade" was the kickstarter for Wendy and Mike Ezelle of The Juice Joint and Arthur Lucas of Freehouse Brewery. The two local beverage creators have developed, separately but collaboratively, a couple of "not to be missed" summer offerings involving organic grapefruit. Freehouse has just released its "Folly's Pride" Grapefruit Blonde Summer Session Ale and The Juice Joint will be serving organic Grapefruit Agua Fresca with blueberry and mint. The agua fresca combines fresh-pressed grapefruit juice with mint-infused agave syrup, crushed blueberries and sparkling water.

What's the story?

Collaboration between breweries is a common business practice but is hardly the norm between a juice bar and brewery. "Freehouse wanted to use the zest of the organic grapefruits but didn't want to waste the rest of the fruit, so they reached out to us and we jumped at the chance to work with the juice," says Wendy Ezelle of The Juice Joint. "As members of Lowcountry Local First, it's always a great thing when two local businesses can work together, and whether you try the Folly's Pride or Juice Joint Grapefruit Agua Fresca, it's a great way to cool down this summer in Charleston."

Who's buying it?

Locals and tourist alike looking to cool off with a refreshing summer beverage with roots in the Lowcountry local pantry are ordering this refreshing "water."

Who's selling it?

The Grapefruit Agua Fresca will be featured at The Juice Joint, with locations on Folly Beach and James Island as well as the Charleston Farmers Market at Marion Square.

Meanwhile, Folly's Pride, the ale that launched the agua fresca, can be found at Chico Feo's and Jack of Cups on Folly Beach and other bars and restaurants where craft beers are part of the menu.

What's the price?

Grapefruit Agua Fresca, $4 and $5.50
