SLED investigating death of teen at DJJ detention center

COLUMBIA - State law enforcement is investigating the death of a teenager who was in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

DJJ spokeswoman Loretta Neal confirmed Monday a 16-year-old was found dead in his cell alone Sunday night at the detention center in Columbia. Neal said she could not provide additional information, because the investigation is in its early stages.

The case is being investigated by SLED, Neal said. The Richland County Coroner's Office is conducting an autopsy.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts could not be reached for comment.
