Five years after it closed a primary care clinic on Johns Island because of declining demand, the Fetter Health Care Network is marking its return. A new center on Maybank Highway starts accepting patients today.

The Johns Island Medical Center of Fetter Health Care Network will start accepting patients on July 14.

The clinic is located at the Sea Island Comprehensive Building, 3627 Maybank Highway, Johns Island.

"We are excited about the opportunity to return much needed services to Johns Island," says Reuben Pettiford, chief executive officer of Fetter Health Care Network, in a prepared statement. "With the full support of our board and staff, we welcome new and former patients. Fetter is enthusiastically making it happen on Johns Island."

The Fetter Health Care Network operates eight federally qualified health centers, which treat patients regardless of their insurance status or their ability to pay full prices for services. Last week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced it will invest $100 million available through the Affordable Care Act to expand primary care access at similar clinics across the country.

South Carolina has already received $125 million through the Affordable Care Act for "health center services and construction including support for eight new health centers in South Carolina," according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The new Fetter clinic on Johns Island, located inside the Sea Island Comprehensive Building, was not renovated using funds available through the Affordable Care Act, said Virginia King, the network's community affairs manager. The original clinic, located in the same location, closed in 2009 because too few patients used it, she said.

Fetter Health Care Network already operates seven other sites in Hollywood, Walterboro, North Charleston, Moncks Corner, Summerville, Cross and Charleston.

The Fetter clinics served nearly 19,000 people in 2012, according to information aggregated on the state's website. Fetter Health Care Network treats insured and uninsured patients.

The clinics charge for services based on a sliding scale discount program. A $30 fee is charged to those patients whose income falls below 100 percent of the federal poverty level.
