A man fell overboard in the Stono River early Saturday, and there was no indication he had been found by the end of the day.

About 2:30 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of the John P. Limehouse Boat Landing on Johns Island to investigate a report of a missing boater, according to Charleston County Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson.

Deputies were told that two men went boating in the Stono Rover on a 13-to-14-foot Boston Whaler when they started having engine problems.

One of the boaters fell into the water while they were trying to secure the boat to a dock, the release said.

The Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol Unit and its Dive Team, the Charleston County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, the Coast Guard, the state Department of Natural Resources and the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy were sent to the scene.

The search continued throughout day.
