ROCK HILL, S.C. - A former Lancaster County sheriff has been arrested after police say he fired pellets, marbles and paintballs at his neighbors.
Rock Hill police said 58-year-old Johnny Cauthen turned himself in Thursday and was charged with malicious damage to property.
Investigators say one of Cauthen's neighbors reported her glass door was shattered by a small object on June 6. A second neighbor reported small dents in her windshield. Police found pellets, paintballs and marbles in the neighbors' yards.
Cauthen was elected sheriff in Lancaster County in 1996 and was re-elected twice before deciding not to run for health reasons in 2008.
He did not have a lawyer when he appeared in court Thursday, and he did not talk about the allegations during the bond hearing.
