Four agents sign on with Carolina One
Professionals with backgrounds in telecommunications, medical, financial and retail fields have joined the Charleston area's largest real estate agency.
The new agents are Lauren Chandler, Henry Ravenel, Kettley Monell and Paul Hurd. They placed their licenses with Carolina One Real Estate.
According to the company, Ravenel and Chandler will work from the downtown Broad Street office. Monell will be joining the office on Main Street in Summerville, and Hurd has chosen the Coleman Boulevard center in Mount Pleasant.
An Atlanta native, Chandler moved to Charleston two years ago. The University of Georgia graduate previously worked in New York City and Atlanta in sales and management for the "home and gift" industry.
Ravenel, who studied construction management at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, had been a consultant with Raymond James financial services company. He's associated with The Ravenel Group specializing in real estate repairs, home renovations, improvements and maintenance.
Monell, born in Vieques, Puerto Rico, has resided in the Charleston area for the past five years. She earned an associate's degree in health science from Trident Technical College. Monell lives in North Charleston with her husband and two children.
A 17-year veteran of the telecommunications trade, Hurd was employed in management and sales at industry leaders Alltel, Verizon and T-Mobile. The Norfolk, Va., native holds a human resources degree from Old Dominion University.

New Seabrook online site champions tourism
The challenge was to bring together a beachside community's history, charm and privacy that could be exported to the public via the Internet.
According to backers, they met the test at Seabrook Island by developing an "interactive web portal."
They say the all new SeabrookIsland.com "takes everything visitors love about Seabrook Island and showcases it in a way that's easy to navigate and explore."
A main goal of the site, supporters note, is to provide a resource for Seabrook Island residents and visitors where they can easily find the information they seek, all in one place.
"SeabrookIsland.com was built from the ground up, after careful research focused in the latest tech developments and trends in the travel and tourism industry," says Robert Hart, project director.
"By incorporating a fully responsive design with engaging videos and informative content, we can bring Seabrook Island into the 21st century and give it the web presence it deserves," he says.
From the homepage, users can quickly access popular features such as vacation rentals, up-to-date news, dining and entertainment options and an event calendar.
More than 40 percent of online traffic related to travel queries comes from mobile devices, the online designers say, citing research from HeBS Digital.
SeabrookIsland.com optimizes the viewing experience for computers, smartphones and tablets, they say.
According to designers, the website is expected to serve more than 500,000 "unique" visitors this year. That gives travel planners a resource for making Seabrook Island vacation plans or booking rentals.
"As one of America's most popular tourist destinations, the Lowcountry is rich in history and culture," Hart says. "But without the web presence required to engage and inform visitors, the region will remain a best-kept secret," he says.

California native joins Castengera team at island real estate agency
The latest agent to sign on with Daniel Island Real Estate will be matched with a Realtor whose career goes back to the early days of the community.
Bob Welsh recently came on board with the established Berkeley County agency. He's a Daniel Island resident who was born in California.
Welsh will partner with Sally Castengera, an 18-year veteran and "consistent top producer" at Daniel Island Real Estate, to sell property in the waterside town.

Haviland to take over as agency's Coleman Boulevard chief
A top-producing agent and former resort specialist will be the new manager at one of Carolina One Real Estate's offices east of the Cooper.
Christopher D. "Chris" Haviland has been selected to replace Dave Sansom as manager of the Coleman Boulevard office in Mount Pleasant.
Sansom has relocated to Carolina One's Services Center in North Charleston. He will assume the duties of chief operating officer and chief financial officer, the company says.
Since joining Carolina One in 2010, Haviland has worked from the agency's Isle of Palms office.
"I am passionate about the real estate business and very excited to be part of this team and leading the Coleman office," he says.
Prior to assuming his new post, Haviland was a perennial real estate "top producer" with Carolina One, the agency notes.
Haviland was the general manager of Wild Dunes Resort on the Isle of Palms from 1997 to 2004 and then operations manager for the Ginn Co. regional real estate and resort firm.
The Allendale, N.J., native graduated from Bryant College in Rhode Island with a degree in marketing. After a successful career in resort and hospitality management, Haviland moved from Aspen, Colo., to Charleston in 1997 with his wife Cindi and their two daughters.

A long-time insurance agent, notary and new-construction rep has joined ReMax on Main Street in Summerville.
Vicky L. Fulton counts more than 20 years' experience "in serving the needs of her customers," ReMax says.
She's spent 17-plus years as owner and agent of her Allstate agency. More recently, she was a home sales representative for new-construction homes in Summerville.

Commercial company starts hospitality division in Charleston
NAI Avant has branched into the business of brokering hotels, inns and other lodging real estate.
The commercial agency says it has added a hospitality division to its "current array of services." At the same time, the brokerage plans to further expand its services by collaborating with Encore Lodging of Charleston.
"The hospitality sector of the real estate market has been exceptionally aggressive over the past few years," says David Grubbs, managing principal of the company's Charleston office. "Transactions on both the buying and selling sides have demonstrated great value," he says.

Residents choose Cotton's Crossing as name for new subdivision
After narrowing the field to five, New Leaf Builders left the final choice of its new James Island neighborhood up to the "local community" via the Internet.
The votes are in, and the winner is "Cotton's Crossing."
The newly named neighborhood will be situated off Woodland Shores Road. It will stand across from another New Leaf community, Fox Hollow.
The builders thanked everyone who took part in the contest. "We appreciate your support and involvement in naming our newest community."
New Leaf plans to start work soon on the 26-lot village, "introducing its newest classic collection of homes."
Home site reservations will be ready by the end of the summer and construction should start by early fall.
According to New Leaf, "Custom home plans for this neighborhood have been developed borrowing heavily from local rural island styles." The three and four bedroom homes offer "fresh coastal craftsman detailing" with functional floor plans, broad porches and shelter overhangs.
In lining up the name choices for voters, the builder company said it came up with potential titles "that honor the heritage of James Island and speak to its history of railway transport for cotton, rice and other goods."
The five possibilities, with New Leaf's descriptions, were:
- Clapper Bridge Way - "Handcrafted junctions on old timber bridges were called 'clapper bridges,' perhaps because of the quaint sound trains made when passing over."
- Wayside - "Imagine a welcoming, safe spot to pull over and rest. The pausing place, the comfort zone. The term for the trackside, and giving right of way in railroad-speak."
- Fettle Junction - "If you're in 'fine fettle' you're in good spirits, a happy place. Fettle is also the term for making improvements and repairs on the tracks."
- Porters Post - "Porters help out, they carry the load, do the work, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride (or the new front porch)."
- Cotton's Crossing - "Cotton was king on these sea islands, and remains woven through the fabric of Lowcountry history. Railway crossings have always been community hubs, centers of vibrant sharing amidst life's comings and goings, just like New Leaf neighborhoods."
The builders requested that people go on its Facebook page or a provided link to vote for their favorites. The contest deadline was May 29. According to New Leaf, there would be a drawing for the grand prize of $500 in gift cards or $5,000 towards upgrades on a home in the community.
Grant Zinkon and Adam Baslow, who have a combined 20 plus years of experience in real estate, developing, and building in the Lowcountry, formed a partnership in 2011 to launch New Leaf Builders.
The company bills itself as a "local, award-winning custom and semi-custom homebuilder." Attributes include unique floor plans, quality and sustainable products and craftsmanship "that will stand the test of time." Its communities are on James Island, Johns Island and West Ashley.
