MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. - The South Carolina Air National Guard says it is flying an air defense exercise over the Walterboro and Hampton areas.
Senior Master Sgt. Ed Snyder says Wednesday's activity is a training exercise and should not alarm people.
Snyder says members of the 169th Fighter Wing from McEntire Joint National Guard Base near Eastover are escorting a single-engine aircraft belonging to the Civil Air Patrol between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Snyder says the exercise is coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration. The event is meant to train Guard pilots with their duty as part of the nation's airspace defense network.
The wing conducts such training exercises as part of the nation's North American Aerospace Defense Command mission, which was stepped up following the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
