Dozens of rescue units from multiple jurisdictions gathered at a Charleston County boat landing Friday after a car was spotted in the water.

A red Pontiac was seen underwater near Poplar Grove about 6 p.m. Rescue units were called while divers checked it out.

Nobody was inside, and the car had been reported stolen, Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson said. The car was brought to shore about 8:40 p.m. and towed off.

Barry Goodwin, 17, who lives in Poplar Grove, saw the car while he was in a john boat with two friends and reported it to authorities. He said it appears the car went into the water from the bank across from Poplar Grove and the boat landing.
