COLUMBIA - Winthrop University has fired its president less than a year after hiring her to take over at the Rock Hill school.
University trustees voted unanimously Thursday to terminate Jamie Comstock Williamson's contract. The trustees say Williamson violated the university's nepotism policy by hiring her husband, provided false information and was demeaning and rude.
Williamson denied all the trustees' complaints. Her lawyer, Bev Carroll, says trustees knew about her husband's $27,000 part time job and discussed it with Williamson before she started as president on July 1, 2013.
Carroll says Williamson couldn't fight the allegations because the university took her office keys and locked her out of her email two weeks ago.
Winthrop gave Williamson a five-year contract. She was being paid almost $300,000 a year. She has threatened to sue.
