Another fish soon will join the sea of preppy retailers on lower King Street.
Vineyard Vines, the upscale clothier best known by its tiny, pink whale logo, will open its first South Carolina storefront this fall at 275 King St.
The Stamford, Conn.-based company is no stranger to the Charleston area, however. Vineyard Vines is well-stocked by the local men's store M. Dumas & Sons, and the company has sponsored local events such as Charleston Race Week and the Southern Ground Music & Food Festival.
"We have an incredibly loyal following in Charleston and are thrilled to be opening a store in such an iconic and beautiful East Coast city," said Shep Murray, chief executive officer of Vineyard Vines.
Marketed like a country club lifestyle brand, Vineyard Vines carries casual styles for men and women that center on bright colors and bold prints. Its prices: Women's skirts hover around $100, and a men's sportcoat is about $500.
The retailer will be the first long-term tenant in the building near Wentworth Street since the high-end apparel store Biton moved out two years ago.
American Eagle shuttered its storefront in Mount Pleasant Towne Centre on Sunday. The teen-oriented apparel chain had operated the store between Stylexchange and Copper Penny for nearly as long as the shopping center has existed. Further details about the store closure were not available Wednesday.
A new bakery and coffee shop is headed to North Charleston near Mixson Market and Park Circle.
Ragamuffin Sugar Shop plans to open by mid-July at 4245 Rivers Ave., according to co-owner Candice Padgett, who is opening the business with husband Lee Padgett.
The sweet-centric bakeshop will offer a wide array of cupcakes, Candice said, as well as cookies, candy and ice cream. They will also serve breakfast sandwiches in the morning, she added.
