While most July Fourth foods spend time on a grill, a Myrtle Beach bakery is tapping into the American tradition of gluttony by marking the holiday with a cupcake-eating contest.
Registration for the Croissants Bistro & Bakery event is free. According to the official rules, "The object is to be the contestant to eat the most cupcakes within a five-minute time span." Should the gorging period end in a draw, "sudden death will occur," apparently meaning the finalists will participate in another two-minute round.
"Any visible signs of sickness during the competition will cause disqualification," the rules warn.
The winner will receive a prize package including tickets to area attractions and restaurant coupons.
To register for the July 4 contest, visit croissants.net. The event, featuring carnival games, face painting and pony rides, runs from 2 p.m.-5 p.m., but the contest is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
Croissants Bistro & Bakery is located at 3751 Grissom Parkway in Myrtle Beach. For more information, call 448-2253.
