MOUNT PLEASANT - Petrel added to its lead Friday in the Carolina Billfish Classic but must wait at the Toler's Cove Marina dock Saturday to see how it fares in the third tournament of the South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series.
Petrel, owned by Harry Johnson Jr. and captained by John Thomas, released three sailfish Friday to add 600 points to its previous 1,400 (two blue marlin worth 600 points each and a sailfish caught on Thursday). But Petrel has used its two allotted fishing days in the three-day event.
Second place with 1,200 and also fished out is Sportin' Life, owned by Manly and Graham Eubank and captained by Mike Glaesner. Sportin' Life caught its second blue of the tournament Friday.
Third is held by Russell Hatt, owned by Cynthia and Kirkland Russell and captained by Robert Mintz. Russell Hatt has 1,000 points and also has fished its two days, releasing two sailfish Thursday and a blue marlin Friday.
Participants released two blue marlin, one white marlin and nine sailfish Friday.
Mister Pete took over the dolphin lead with a 42.6-pound catch Friday; Three J's moved atop the wahoo standings with a 52.4-pound catch Friday; while Da Bote remained atop the tuna division with a 16-pound catch Thursday.
Saturday's final weigh-in is from 5-7 p.m.
