After crowds showed up in droves over the past two days to shop Piggly Wiggly's warehouse clearance sale, the company announced Friday that it will not continue the sale Saturday as originally planned. Piggly Wiggly spokeswoman Christy Boudolf said merchandise will likely be wiped out by the end of the day Friday, so the distribution center in Jedberg could be shuttered as soon as this afternoon.
"The event was advertised as while supplies last, and the response yesterday was incredible," Boudolf said in a written statement.
Piggly Wiggly advertised the sale earlier this week as an inventory reduction sale from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
Shoppers said the line of cars to pull into the center at 1125 Newton Way was over a mile long by mid-morning Thursday. Many also said crowds had to wait in a long line outside the center for more than two hours to shop the 70 percent off sale of bulk items such as cleaning supplies, frozen foods and tobacco products.
Piggly Wiggly held the sale to clean out the distribution center that the company no longer uses to supply its grocery stores in South Carolina and Georgia. The company announced in November that it was shutting down the 612,000-square-foot facility after partnering with a new supplier, C&S Wholesale Grocers.
Agro Merchants is leasing the refrigerated section of the Summerville property. Its move-in date is set for August.
