Five dollars buys a plate of fried fish, hush puppies and slaw at the Sullivan's Island Fire & Rescue Fish Fry, but what's more impressive is what the dinner proceeds have bought over the past 65 years.
Since the department launched the event in 1949 to fund an operation for a member's relative, the annual fundraiser has paid for rescue boats; Jet Skis; pickup trucks; a boat house and a fish fry shack, as well as routine equipment maintenance.
The benefit is just one year younger than the volunteer squad. "A group of Island men started the fire department with two trucks donated by the Army," after the Army moved out of Fort Moultrie in 1948, organizer Anthony Stith says.
This year's Fish Fry is scheduled for Saturday, June 28; the event runs from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Look for the signs (or listen for the live music, courtesy of Fowler's Moustache.)
