Rigel Fernandes extended his lead in the Rice Planters Amateur Thursday at Snee Farm Country Club, shooting a 5-under-par 67, to take a five-stroke advantage over Carter Page at the midway point of the 72-hole tournament.

Fernandes, a native of India who just completed his freshman season at the University of South Florida, is at 12-under 132. The 72-hole Rice Planters scoring record is 20 under par.

Page, a rising junior at North Carolina State, shot a 1-under 71 for a 137 total and is one in front of Ryan Cole, who just completed his freshman season at James Madison.

William Betts and Rhyne Jones are tied for fourth at 139. Mount Pleasant's Andrew Novak, who just finished his freshman year at Wofford, is in a three-way tie for sixth at 4-under 140.

Fernandes made only one bogey Thursday, on the par-3 seventh, while notching six birdies, four of them coming on the back nine.

Page managed to stay out of trouble but only managed one birdie, on the par-5 second hole.

Cole had a roller-coaster front nine 34 that included birdies at 1, 5, 7 and 9 with bogeys at 4 and 6. He added two birdies on the back nine.

Novak, a former Academic Magnet student, got off to a birdie-eagle start. He bogeyed 6 but birdied 8 and 9 to make the turn at 32.

He made eight pars and a bogey (on the par-4 12th) on the back nine.

The field will be cut to the low 54 and ties following Friday's round. Tee times begin at 8 a.m.
