Petrel, owned by Harry Johnson Jr. and captained by John Thomas, released two blue marlin and one sailfish Thursday to take the lead in the Carolina Billfish Classic being fished out of Toler's Cove Marina. Petrel has 1,400 points, 600 for each of the blue marlin releases and 200 for the sailfish.
Second placed, based on time of release, is Big Kahuna, owned by Rhett Spencer and captained by Ted Porter, with 600 points for a blue marlin release.
Sportin' Life, owned by Manly and Graham Eubank and captained by Mike Glaesner, also released a blue marlin for 600 points.
Twenty-eight boats are participating in the third of five events that comprise the South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series. The anglers released a total of five blue marlin and 10 sailfish. The tournament continues through Saturday with boats allowed to fish two out of three days.
Da Bote leads the tuna division with a 16.0-pound blackfin; Blue Sky has the top dolphin at 34.6 pounds; and Russell Hatt has the top wahoo, 45.4 pounds.
The Hampton Wildlife Fund will hold a fundraising banquet in conjunction with the Carolina Billfish Classic. The Hampton Wildlife Fund banquet will be held from 6-10 p.m. Friday at Gold Bug Island, located across Ben Sawyer Boulevard from Toler's Cove.
