BEAUFORT - A tourism commission in Beaufort is recommending an independent veterinarian check on carriage horses that work in the city.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the Tourism Advisory Commission wants annual checkups of the horses by an outside veterinarian.

The city's two carriage companies currently have their own vets examine the horses twice a year. The panel recommends that continue.

The outside check-ups would have to be paid for by the carriage companies. The change would have to be approved by Beaufort City Council.

The recommendation comes after a horse owned by one of the carriage companies fell twice in recent months.
