When Ian MacBryde and Roth Scott started thinking about Boxcar Betty's, they thought about ambiance first. "We have always had a soft spot for great greasy spoon restaurants," the West Ashley restaurant's website explains. "And although we love the food, we never loved sitting in them."
So the pair fixed up the former Olympic Deli in French cafe-style, with white Windsor chairs and a surprising amount of greenery.
They also dispensed with the traditional greasy spoon menu that runs for miles: Boxcar Betty's serves almost exclusively fried chicken sandwiches. The only other available items are fries, slaw, fried chicken salad, fried chicken strips and a stuffed mushroom cap for non-chicken eaters. Toppings include blue cheese, bacon jam and pimento cheese.
"I can safely say this is substantially better then Chick-fil-A," the first eater to review Boxcar Betty's on Yelp decreed.
Boxcar Betty's, 1922 Savannah Highway, is open daily from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
