Eric Oetgen won the A.C. Hollings Award while Mike Miller received the Clyde Easterling Award in the 2014 James Island Yacht Club Open Regatta sailed Saturday and Sunday in Charleston Harbor.
The Hollings Award goes to the winner of the class with the most entries and Oetgen out-sailed 20 contestants in that fleet, notching a sixth, seventh, third and first in the four Lightning races. Paul Whitesides finished second, one point behind Oetgen.
Miller, a member of James Island Yacht Club, received the Easterling Award for winning the Sea Island One Design class, besting four other contestants. Miller had three firsts, two seconds and was able to throw out a fourth-place finish for a total of 11 points. Stan LaRoche also threw out a fourth-place finish and had two firsts, a second and two thirds for 10 points.
"We had 123 boats sailing three courses," JIYC Commodore Jay Stewart said. "Saturday's sailing was a little tough with a thunderstorm in the middle of the day but we were able to hold out and get off some good races despite light air. (Sunday) we had some great races. The wind was out of the northeast and it was excellent sailing."
Alex Mazzeo was the overall junior winner, finishing first in the Opti Red fleet. Rose Rowland won the award for oldest James Island Yacht Club member who finished all the races, competing in the Sunfish Masters. Ellen Mitchum was honored as the youngest James Island member, competing in the Opti Green fleet.
